Between hectic schedules and the craziness of a commercial gym, a home gym is a private option for those looking to start or maintain a fitness regime. Proponents of a home gym enjoy the focus, time efficiency, and freedom a home gym provides, while also enjoying the compounded amount in savings from not having a gym membership. If building a home gym is in your future, follow these considerations:

Design Considerations

Ask yourself the following questions before embarking on your construction:

  • What sort of exercises will I do in this space? This question will define how much space you will need. For example, if you have multiple types of lifting equipment (deadlift, free weights, bench press) then you will need to consider the space you use to safety conduct these exercises. StrongLift.com suggests finding a basement or garage space with at least 108 square feet. If you plan to do dance, cardio, Zumba, or other free moving activities, a space that is at least 10” by 10” is probably the bare minimum dimensions.

The proper height of your home gym is an essential dimension to take as well. We suggest having a space that is at least three feet higher than your height, so you can jump, move around, raise your hands, and freely move.
  • What type of equipment will you use? Treadmills, ski machines, stationary bikes, elliptical, and multi-use lifting systems all take up space. Before you design your home gym, consider the types of weight lifting and cardio machines you want. Keep in mind that each piece of equipment should have at least two feet between them for safety. This will also help you gauge the layout of your room.

Material Considerations

Flooring: Rubber flooring works well in home gyms because it’s a cushiony, shockproof, and a supportive material. If you are building an at-home yoga gym, consider using bamboo or cork flooring, as they are sustainable and easy on your joints. Hardwood floors can be used if your at-home gym will be used exclusively for cardio or dance exercises. Avoid using hardwood if you are putting heavy equipment or using any sort of weight.

All in all, select a floor that is dent resistant and easy to clean. Avoid carpet, as it is susceptible to sweat stains and stink. Your focus should be working out, not worrying about how your surroundings will hold up, so the right flooring is essential in at at-home gym.

Mirrors and Accessories: Many individuals enjoy working out in front of a mirror to ensure that they are using the proper form. Mirrors are usually floor height and extend from. This area of the house should be well lit.

Intelligent Design

Ventilation: A hot and muggy room is not only uncomfortable, but can lead to mold issues. Make sure to invest in good ventilation and/or windows.

Isolation: If you have young children in your household, it might be tough for you to listen to music or make noise lifting weights if your exercise space is in close proximity to the kids’ bedrooms. Keep that in mind as you select the right place for your home gym.
